Anna’s formula for success

Shortcuts’ Fleur Murphy chatted with Anna Field to discover the secrets behind her success.

Could you describe your role?

In 2003, when we first opened our doors, I had to juggle all aspects of the business. I did everything from providing treatments, to getting the word out to new clients, to managing the day-to-day running of the salon.

These days, my role is essentially to ensure the business continues to move forward. This includes training and nurturing staff to help them perform at their very best, overseeing the financial management of the business, and strategic marketing.

What motivates you?

I am motivated by my successes, large and small. Whether it’s making $7000 from one email campaign, or simply feeling that I have been true to my core beliefs, I derive immense satisfaction from seeing the small things I work on contribute to the bigger picture of a successful business.

What challenges do you face in the industry?

As a beauty therapist, people think I spend all of my time painting nails. Although making people feel nice is a huge part of what I do, there is so much technical knowledge and expertise involved in really helping people and changing the way they feel about themselves.

I’m quite opinionated in some ways, because I have to be to overcome the misconceptions people have about our field of work. I put a lot of energy into showing people that beauty is a profession, not just a cottage industry.

First and foremost, our staff are highly qualified and we focus on ongoing training so they are up to date with the latest techniques. We also provide an experience for our clients that truly stands out. It’s the little things, like the personal touches we offer with each treatment, that make all the difference. Our staff also wear collared uniforms to emphasise the fact that they are experts in their field.

What does beauty mean to you?

Our industry is really all about building people’s confidence. It can take just moments to transform the way someone feels about themselves, and by providing treatments that really work, and offering genuine service, we help our clients feel their best.

I try to practice what I preach. I look after my skin, pay close attention to my personal grooming, and try to practice empathy every day. I always aim to treat others as I would like to be treated. Beauty is more than superficial.

What makes you tick outside of work?

Travel is my drug of choice. I have spent a lot of time over the years in developing countries, as I love experiencing different cultures and learning how people live and why they do things the way they do. It’s also a way to truly escape – being out of phone and internet range is bliss.

Where would I find you on the weekend?

I really enjoy going for nice walks and exploring parts of my city that I haven’t seen before. Weekends also give me the time to catch up on my reading, which is my biggest passion. I devour autobiographies and biographies by the dozen, and enjoy well-researched fiction. I love being taken on a journey, without ever having to leave the comfort of my arm chair.

What’s your biggest vice?

Champagne is my one and only vice – and after a long day, it’s an absolute necessity.

How would you describe yourself in five words?

I wouldn’t!! Inspiring, focused, unexpected, kind. Oh wait, that’s only four!
